“So . . . how did you do?” Asher asked as I let my bag fall to the sidewalk and took a seat next to him on the bench.
“Aced it, of course,” I said, grinning and handing over my paper. He took a look at the big A written in bloodred ink across the top of the page and then gave me a high five.
“That’s awesome!” he said. “Not that there was ever any question. I mean, if you know your stuff enough to tutor people, then you’re going to pass. Speaking of, how did the others do?”
I was surprised to hear him ask about The Elite, let alone care how they did on the test. I shrugged and busied myself with opening my Diet Coke. After we’d gotten our test scores back in class and took a moment to celebrate our shared victory, I’d convinced The Elite that I needed to find Asher at the break. Especially considering what I needed to talk to him about. I hadn’t planned on waiting until the last minute to talk to Asher about the beach, but we’d only just gotten the scores today, and I’d wanted to wait until I knew the trip was a done deal before bringing it up.
“Not as well as me, but they killed it,” I said.
And they had. Well, I had on their behalf, but as far as everyone else knew, Eliza and Wheatley had passed with solid scores. So far no one had questioned anything, thank God.
“Guess all that studying really paid off, didn’t it?” he said, leaning back and placing his arm on the bench behind my shoulders. “Maybe now we can get some alone time.”
“Yeah,” I said quietly. “Thanks for loaning me to them while we studied.”
I leaned in and slowly gave him tiny kisses up the side of his face. He snuggled in closer to me, enjoying the PDA.
“Well, let’s not make a habit of it, okay? I don’t exactly like sharing you with anyone else, and those two can definitely afford to hire tutors,” he said. “Tutors who aren’t you.”
I dropped my mouth open in mock shock. “Asher Astley, are you jealous of The Elite?”
“Not at all,” he said. “I just think that your time could be better spent hanging out with me.”
“We spend time together,” I said defensively, not looking to get into an argument.
“Brooklyn, you’re already spending all your time with them here at school,” Asher said, sounding frustrated. “You ate lunch with them all this week, you’re linked at the hip between classes, and I don’t even see you at your locker in the morning anymore.”
Hoping to salvage this conversation, I took ahold of his hand. “Well, what if I told you that there was a way we could do both. Hang out with The Elite and spend time together?”
He gave me a look that said, “Yeah, right.”
“I promise,” I said. I made a cross over my heart, kissed my fingers, and then placed them on his lips. “Look,
